Is it a candle? Is it a lamp? Lumir is a bit of both, and it was designed to provide electricity-free, long-lasting lighting that doesn’t hurt the environment.
Built by a team from Seoul, South Korea, the Lumir light is available now through a Kickstarter campaign, which so far has raised $84,598 with a $50,000 goal. Individual lights are available through the crowdfunding stage, but Lumir eventually plans to market their lights to non-profit organizations.
The company behind Lumir specifically wants to be able to market their lights to India – founder Jay Park said blackouts there inspired his work – and to developing countries. An early version of the Lumir light was introduced in the Philippines, where people tested it in their own households and provided feedback.
A tea light sits at the base of the lamp, while the engineered interior uses the Seebeck Effect – the way a difference in temperatures can produce a difference in voltage – to power a LED. It doesn’t require a battery or any external power supply – just the candle. When you’re done using it, the candle can be blown out. The LED provides brighter light than a small candle could produce on its own, without using any additional energy.
Lumir comes in two slightly different form factors, the ‘mood lamp’-shaped Lumir-C and spot lamp Lumir K. Funding from the Kickstarter will go toward manufacturing.
