Time Warner Cable has started to deploy the cable industry’s converged cable access platform (CCAP) with Casa Systems and Arris.
Time Warner Cable has CCAP up and running in several markets to provide more bandwidth for the delivery of its data services.
“CCAP will provide the increased density and corresponding capacity needed to meet the growth of our data services,” said Howard Pfeffer, Time Warner Cable’s senior vice president, broadband technology group. “The deployments have been extremely successful. We look forward to continued network growth, enabling the development of new and advanced services for our customers.”
The end game for CCAP is to eventually combine edge QAMs and cable modem termination systems into one ultra-dense platform. Time Warner Cable is taking a two-pronged approach by deploying Casa’s C100G cable modem termination system (CMTS) and the E6000 Converged Edge Router from Arris.
Casa took the wraps of its C100G CMTS earlier this year. Casa’s integrated C100G can support up to 8,000 downstreams when fully loaded.
Arris announced the E6000 last fall and it became widely available earlier this year. https://www.cedmagazine.com/news/2013/07/arris-ramps-production-on-new-flagship-cmts The E6000 supports 56 downstream service groups per chassis (16 RU), each with up to 32 downstream channels with Integrated RF sparing. It can also support a maximum of 72 downstream service groups per chassis each with up to 32 downstream channels. After previously trialing Arris’ E6000 cable modem termination system (CMTS), Comcast now has it in commercial deployments.
Comcast has conducted field deployments of CCAP while Cox Communications teamed up with Cisco on modular trials earlier this year.
