Time Warner Cable Business Class, the commercial services division of Time Warner Cable, has opened the doors on a new data center in downtown Manhattan to better serve its business customers.
The 17,000-square-foot facility is located at 395 Hudson Street, which was unscathed by flood waters from Superstorm Sandy since its located on a “Zone B” 100-year floodplain.
The data center offers dedicated Internet access and Ethernet services from Time Warner Cable Business Class and is also carrier neutral, which allows clients to cross-connect with multiple providers.
“Information technology is the lifeblood of any business and protecting these assets in a secure data center is a high priority in today’s business world,” said Ken Fitzpatrick, president of Time Warner Cable Business Class, East Region. “We are pleased to offer the business community this data facility to serve all their colocation needs. Our data facility gives IT managers the peace of mind that their assets are safe, accessible and available to ensure their businesses operate optimally.”
Among other service providers, Time Warner Cable competes with Verizon for both business and residential customers in most of the New York City boroughs.
The data center was designed to meet the needs of enterprise, small-and medium-sized businesses, as well as governmental and educational entities, seeking to manage their IT infrastructure with efficiency, security and redundancy.
With the opening of the Manhattan data center, Time Warner Cable Business Class now operates nine data centers throughout the United States, and another in the United Kingdom.
“As the state senator representing the heart of New York City’s rapidly-expanding tech sector, I’m proud to welcome this Time Warner Cable Business Class data center to my district,” New York State Senator Brad Hoylman said. “Access to secure data centers is increasingly important for large and small businesses, and I think Time Warner Cable’s center will help serve as a catalyst for continued growth in the IT industry, which is key to our city’s economic future.”
The data center allows companies to occupy space sizes within the building to fit their needs instead of a “one size fits all” approach. Space in the facility is offered in units, quarter-sized, half-sized and full racks, as well as customer cages.
The facility is powered by multiple power routes and parallel UPS that feed from two Con Edison substations on different grids. The facility is also equipped with dual generators for redundant back-up power with hot refuel capabilities.
The data center also features round-the-clock security by personnel and monitoring, and onsite service support. As a member of The Green Grid, the data center deploys energy efficient technologies and uses energy-efficient hardware and equipment to offer a green environment.
In a January fourth-quarter and year-end earnings call, Time Warner Cable’s business services revenue grew 26 percent to $515 million in the fourth quarter and 29 percent to $1.9 billion last year. Time Warner Cable added more than 1,500 new employees to its business services headcount, which was a 35 percent increase, and nearly doubled the number of commercial buildings that were connected to its fiber.
