Time Warner Cable has updated its TWC TV app to include VOD content on Apple iOS devices.
With the update, Time Warner Cable is now serving up 4,000 VOD titles on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch devices to subscribers. The movies and shows come in both SD and HD formats from 91 providers. Users have access to the VOD programming associated with their subscription packages. Other cable operators, such as Cablevision, also offer subscribers access to their VOD libraries across multiple screens.
“We are very excited to continue building on the success of TWC TV with the addition of on-demand viewing to the app, with thousands of titles available immediately at no additional cost,” said Michael Angus, senior vice president and general manager of video at Time Warner Cable. “We were the first to bring live television to our customers on their mobile devices, and bringing on-demand movies and shows to our customers gives them more ways to enjoy the content we deliver.”
Among cable operators, Time Warner Cable was first out of the gates last year with an iPad app that featured live streams into subscribers’ homes over a separate IP network. Since then, Time Warner Cable has updated the app several times, but Time Warner Cable blogger Jeff Simmermon characterized the most recent upgrade as a major one.
“Not every app update is a big deal – usually it’s just a few bug fixes, stability upgrades, adding some channels here and there. This one is different,” Simmermon wrote. “The initial catalog is a mix of HD and standard-def content. We will be adding more stuff on a regular basis, and adding more HD as we are able. Some networks don’t offer their on-demand product in HD, while some offer a mix of SD and HD. We don’t get absolutely everything in HD today, but we will continue to add to the catalog on an ongoing basis.
“We’ll be making the same upgrade to the TWC TV app for PC and Android in a near-future release, currently targeted to launch in the first quarter of 2013.”
In addition to the on-demand content, the updated TWC TV app lets users browse videos by TV shows, movies, kids and network categories and search the on-demand library by title. Parental control for both live and on-demand shows is also available through the “MyServices” section of Time Warner Cable’s website.
The live TV guide also features a “recently viewed channels” button to quickly recall previously viewed live TV channels. Trick-play features, including fast-forward, rewind and pause, are also enabled, although fast-forward may be disabled in some instances in order to keep viewers from skipping over ads.
The free TWC TV app can be downloaded from iTunes.
