Time Warner Cable’s ‘Connect a Million Minds’ hits milestone

Time Warner Cable’s “Connect a Million Minds” philanthropic initiative, which was launched in November as a way to improve educational efforts in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), recently topped the 100,000 milestone for participants.

The Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) program leverages Time Warner Cable assets across television and the Internet to drive awareness about the importance of education and careers in the STEM areas, as well as to provide information on local, hands-on after-school opportunities to engage kids.

Anchoring the effort is the first-ever, free, zip code-searchable national database designed to help children and their parents find STEM-related after-school activities occurring in their areas.

By pledging to connect 30 young people from his FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics team, Scott Keller from Shorewood, Wis., pushed the Connect a Million Minds counter over the 100,000 mark. Keller learned of the program when he attended Time Warner Cable’s launch of Connect a Million Minds at Milwaukee’s Discovery World in November.

He is a mentor to Team 1732, the Hilltoppers, made up of students from Marquette University High School and Divine Savior Holy Angels School in Milwaukee.

“It’s so wonderful to see people responding to the call to action,” said Tessie Topol, director of strategic philanthropy for Time Warner Cable. “We officially launched less than two months ago, and meeting this benchmark already really shows how important this issue is to our country and how committed our customers are to addressing it.”

On Saturday, representatives from Time Warner Cable’s Milwaukee office presented Keller with a CAMM prize pack and made a $1,000 donation to his robotics team.

Time Warner Cable’s CAMM initiative is a five-year, $100 million program that was designed to address declining proficiency in STEM among children across the nation.
