As part of its TWC Maxx project, Time Warner Cable has completed its speed upgrades in Austin, which means all of its subscribers in the area now have access to faster broadband speeds, including a 300 Mbps down, 20 Mbps up offering.
Time Warner Cable’s Ryan Kelly, integrated communications manager, wrote about the faster data speeds in his blog post on Tuesday. In contrast to AT&T’s GigaPower service, which launched last year in specific neighborhoods of Austin with a 300 Mbps speed before turning up a 1-Gig service this summer, Kelly wrote that every customer in and around Austin now has access to its latest Internet speeds that are now up to six times faster than before at no additional cost.
Time Warner Cable competes with Google Fiber, AT&T and Grande Communications in Austin, with all three either offering or planning to offer a 1-Gig service over fiber.
As part of its “TWC Maxx” service upgrade, Time Warner Cable previously launched 300 Mbps tiers in parts of Los Angeles and New York City while other tiers saw speed increases as well. As a standalone service, the 300 Mbps tier costs $107.99 a month in Austin, Los Angeles and New York City.
Time Warner Cable is increasing its broadband speeds, as well as expanding its VOD library and deploying a cloud-based user interface in some areas, by going all-digital in the TWC Maxx markets.
Time Warner Cable first outlined TWC Maxx in its fourth quarter earnings call earlier this year. The conversion to all digital is already complete in New York City and is on track to be finished in TWC’s Los Angeles footprint by the end of the year.
“As we enter October, we have now delivered faster Internet service to more than 1.5 million customers in our first three TWC Maxx markets,” Kelly wrote. “With Austin complete, and New York and Los Angeles more than halfway done, we are on track to reach our goal of over 3 million customers by the end of 2014.
“TWC Maxx is our effort to reinvent the customer experience market-by-market. Along with faster Internet speeds, we’re providing customers with rock-solid reliability, an all-digital TV lineup, a larger on demand library, and an advanced set-top box with our new, six-tuner enhanced DVR.”
Next year TWC Maxx is slated for Charlotte, Dallas, Hawaii, Kansas City, Raleigh, San Antonio and San Diego.
