TiVo has begun selling the TiVo Mini at retail.

The unit is not itself a DVR, but used in conjunction with TiVo’s four-tuner DVRs (the TiVo Premiere 4 or the TiVo Premiere XL4), the device enables whole-home DVR for TiVo users.

In the past, in order to provide multi-room coverage, a TiVo user typically required a DVR in each room. The TiVo Mini makes use of one of the DVR’s tuners to provide viewers with the control and access of content on a TV in another room of the house. Users will even be able to start a show in the living room and finish it on a TiVo Mini in another room.

The TiVo Mini retails at $100 with a $6/month subscription fee, or $250 with a lifetime subscription.

In addition to TV, movies, music, and access to social networking sites, the TiVo Mini will include a gaming component, the company said. Users can access and play a variety of games, including Quizzmaster, Black Jack and Wordsmith.

TiVo Mini delivers Comcast’s Xfinity On Demand content to Xfinity customers in select markets. Suddenlink has been supplying the device to subscribers in well over 100 communities in its service area.
