The board of selectman in Lee, Mass., is backing the efforts of a local homeowner in his dustup with Time Warner Cable over a $12,000 installation bill.
According to the Berkshire Eagle, Time Warner Cable has 30 days to change course over billing Mark Williams $12,000 instead of the usual $35 installation fee. If Time Warner Cable doesn’t revise the bill during that timeframe, the town of Lee will start taking money from the $10,000 that Time Warner Cable deposited as part of its local franchise agreement.
Williams’ home is 300 feet away from the nearest utility pole, and Time Warner Cable’s installation fee covers 200 feet. Williams, according to the newspaper, was willing to pay more for the additional 100 feet, but not to the tune of $12,000.
For its part, Time Warner Cable has said that it’s within the company’s rights to charge a higher fee for installing cable in remote sections of a community.
Three years ago, a similar case for a $1,102 installation fee in Lee was resolved.
