BMW and Toyota are moving forward toward an effort to build a midsize sports car together and have agreed on common underpinnings for the vehicle’s major components.

BMW has said that the program to create the car is “progressing according to plan.” The two carmakers developed initial plans for the vehicle in early 2013, then in November 2014 they reached the concept phase for the car. The carmakers’ cooperation alliance will result in research projects for fuel cells, though testing for those components are not scheduled until 2020, BMW said.
