Pay TV service providers have been paying a lot more attention lately to making content not only seamlessly and quickly accessible from their platforms, but much easier to search and find. Content discovery improvements are a smart move, according to some recent research, like a study from TiVo that concluded viewers born in 1995 and after showed a heavy tendency to give up on shows they previously enjoyed when they felt it became too difficult to find and access them.
Google Fiber looks like it’s honing in some on that consumer demand as it revealed enhancements to its Fiber TV App, which allow users to play and record TV shows, sports, and movies “with one tap” and have easier access to favorite shows and recommendations.
Customers can now access the next episodes of their favorite shows as soon as they open the app. They also can see what sports are available, or are scheduled for later, then record them on the DVR with one tap. Personalized recommendations for live TV are available as well, along with recommended recordings on the DVR as soon as the app opens.
The Fiber TV App will be updated for all the company’s TV subs in the coming weeks.
Of course, other video service providers are advancing their content discovery plays as well. Comcast updated it X1 algorithm to make viewing suggestions more precise in October. It also added a “People Also Watch” feature to X1, which highlights programming that others with similar taste in content have liked.
As for OTT providers, Hulu announced this week that it completed an asset acquisition of The Video Genome Project, a company that offers a way to automatically aggregate the existing metadata around video content. Hulu says it will combine The VGP’s proprietary technology with its own recommendation engine to “dramatically enhance” content discovery.
