Time Warner Cable continues to mount its “TWC Maxx” offensive, this time in Wilmington, N.C. The rollout comes quickly after similar news from the operator late last month from Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
The first wave of customers now have access to Internet speeds of up to 300 Mbps, and TWC promises that customers throughout the remainder of the Wilmington and surrounding areas will see their speeds increase by the end of this summer.
“We’re now able to provide these faster speeds at no additional cost to all of our customers in the Wilmington area,” Darrel Hegar, regional vice president of operations at TWC, reports. “This is just the beginning of the benefits customers will see from our TWC Maxx initiative that will enhance our Internet, video and reliability.”
Along with TWC Maxx, Time Warner Cable has deployed more than 1,500 TWC WiFi Hotspots located both outdoors and indoors in small business locations throughout the Wilmington area, including restaurants, salons and shopping malls. More hotspots are promised through 2016. TWC WiFi is available free to its residential Internet customers with qualifying service tiers (minimum Standard or Extreme) and all Business Class Internet customers.
TWC reports that residential Internet customers see speed increases up to six times faster, depending on their current level of Internet service, and there’s no bump in cost. For example, Standard customers, formerly getting up to 15 Mbps, will now receive up to 50 Mbps. Extreme customers, formerly at up to 30 Mbps, will now receive up to 200 Mbps. Ultimate customers go up to 300 Mbps, up from the previous 100 Mbps.
On the video side, the Maxx rollout also includes enhanced DVR, which lets customers simultaneously record up to six different programs, and the ability to save 150 hours of HD on a 1 TB hard drive. That’s twice the storage of the largest prior model.
