Verimatrix has hooked up with Related Content Database (RCDb) to create a means of securing Blu-ray players for over-the-top distribution of premium video content.
The two are positioning it as a means for network operators to extend the TV Everywhere model to one more device commonly found in consumers’ homes.
Verimatrix has extended its MultiRights architecture for encryption, secure key management and device authentication to protect streaming content to Blu-ray players. No custom player integration is required, Verimatrix said, as the integrated application is delivered in the form of a spec-compliant Blu-ray disc, and the secure content delivery leverages the standards-based and studio-endorsed AACS content protection built into every device.
“Pay-TV operators are responding to competitive pressures by finding innovative ways to add new services,” said Tom Munro, CEO of Verimatrix. “The new generation of high-definition Blu-ray players represents a strategic, low-capital-expenditure opportunity. Our joint solution opens up new avenues of revenue growth for content distribution.”
The solution includes licensing RCDb’s Blu-ray disc client and server platform.
Separately, Verimatrix and Harmonic have combined the former’s VCAS (Video Content Authority System) for Internet TV with the latter’s MediaPrism Convergence Suite to result in a secure means of delivering video services, via HTTP Live Streaming, to a variety of IP devices, including the iPhone, iPad, PC and other products.
The combination delivers protected standard-definition and high-definition content over unmanaged networks to any Internet-connected consumer playback device.
HTTP Live Streaming delivers audio and video streams using standard HTTP protocols, which are transparently supported on existing Web server and CDN delivery infrastructure. The technology supports automatic adaptation to available network types and automatically switches to the optimal bit rate for a smooth quality playback experience, the companies explained.
Both live and VOD content can be delivered using the same protocols, with easy incorporation of targeted advertising segments.
“Securing content delivery is as important to a successful video delivery service as ensuring a quality experience and delivering great channels,” said David Price, vice president of business development and marketing communications at Harmonic. “Working with Verimatrix, we are giving operators the chance to multiply their service offerings, reach more subscribers and increase their value to subscribers, all without adding complexity to their headend.”
