U.K. mobile provider Three has rolled out an unlimited data plan designed to free up space for Netflix and other streaming video. Announced on Wednesday, the “Go Binge” service means that video streaming services Netflix, Deezer, SoundCloud, and TVPlayer will not count toward a user’s data allowance. Spotify, SoundCloud, and other entertainment apps also count as “Go Binge” freebies.
The Go Binge perk is only available for customers who have 4 GB data plans already, and some data may be used since advertisements within entertainment services aren’t included. There’s also a charge for the Go Binge plan itself. New customers will be able to start with a Go Binge plan, while existing customers will be able to add it. Pricing and the date that the service will start have not yet been announced.
Three is following many other major services in making it easier for customers to stream video without having to worry about piling up unexpected or exorbitant prices. Vodafone also recently introduced more data streaming options, although those pull from the monthly data plan.
On its site, Three said that the decision to make this plan came from the growing number of U.K. customers who binge-watch video. They found that 22 percent of customers binge-watch on mobile while they’re out and about, and 54 percent are concerned that they might use all of their data while streaming on the go. Of the customers polled, 44 percent report having watched one hour or more of streamed content on their phones in a row, and 51 percent report doing so on a tablet.
U.K. customers are letting their voices be heard elsewhere as well. Broadband may see an overhaul as the government invests in fiber for homeowners.
