A NASA project known as the Systematic Underwater Biogeochemical Science and Exploration Analog (SUBSEA) will explore around a deep-sea volcano off the coast of Hawaii using underwater robots.
However, this event isn’t just for an Earth-based adventure. Scientists imagine those underwater conditions are akin to what they may encounter on Enceladus, one of Saturn’s moons. If the robots can survive the severity of Earth’s underwater world, then perhaps it could look for life on other ocean planets.
Currently, the project deployed two robot explorers, named Hercules and Argus. Launched from the ship Nautilus, the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) remotely operated the designs. The two robots will be on a 3-week long expedition, roaming around the volcano and simulating human-robotic cooperation to train for future outer space missions.
