On2 Technologies said that Verismo Networks has licensed its On2 VP6 video codec for use in the Verismo VuNow Internet TV platform.
The VP6 license and software integration enable Verismo VuNow devices to play VP6 video in resolutions up to, and including, 720p. Both the standard-definition and HD versions of the VuNow PoD device have passed On2 Certification for playback of VP6.
VP6, through its inclusion in the Adobe Flash and Sun JavaFX application platforms, has become the video format of choice for several Web sites including Hulu, NYTimes.com, CNN, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Toudou and 56.com.
Verismo’s VuNow platform transforms the TV set into a multimedia hub for accessing digital entertainment from the Internet over wired or wireless home networks. The VuNow PoD device plays all leading video formats and supports HDMI (HD version only), RCA and S-Video output to interface with any TV or display.
In February, Verismo’s VuNow Internet TV platform was narrowly selected as the winner of the CableLabs Technology Forum (story here).
