Verizon teamed up with Greenwave Systems on its new home gateway, which, under lab conditions, can deliver up 800 Mbps on the downstream along with an unobstructed Wi-Fi range of up to 325 feet.
The new FiOS Quantum Gateway taps into Greenwave’s Axon software platform to send Wi-Fi signals to various devices within a home. The dual-band gateway divides up the traffic by allotting high bandwidth activities, such as online gaming and video, to the 5 GHz band while less intensive applications, such as email and web browsing, are carried by the 2.4 GHz band.
“We are all bringing more Internet-connected devices into our homes and businesses,” said Guru Pai, Verizon’s senior vice president and chief product officer. “The FiOS Quantum Gateway router enhances our customers’ ability to do everything they want — simultaneously stream videos, download and upload photos, support multiplayer gaming, and use multiple devices and enjoy content from anywhere in the home.”
The gateway uses beamforming and supports the various standards of Wi-Fi, including 802.11b/g/n/ac, as well as MoCA 2.0 and Ethernet. The gateway, which is available today, can be leased for $6.99 a month or purchased for $149.99
Verizon teased future features for its Quantum Gateway including privacy and security access controls such as “guest” passwords, and device-specific access that can allow a parent to set time limits for their kids on selected devices.
