As it tails back on its FiOS build, Verizon has recalled that it has a DSL business, which it moved to bolster by dropping prices and eliminating early termination fees – one of the first major ISPs, if not the first, to drop such fees.
One new tier includes absolutely bare-bones Internet connectivity that arguably qualifies as “broadband.” The tier is a bundle that offers a choice from two unlimited local and long-distance voice services and comes with Internet connectivity from 500 kbps to 1 Mbps. Verizon is charging $19.99 a month for basic phone and data ($14.99 if ordered online).
The other tier – the “Enhanced” tier – features phone service plus the highest-optimized speeds that customers can get at their locations. The maximum speed could fall into any of the following ranges: 1.1 to 3 Mbps, 3.1 to 7 Mbps or 7.1 to 15 Mbps. The lowest charge will be $34.99 a month ($29.99 if ordered online).
The triple play can be completed by adding in TV service from DirecTV.
“We’ve enhanced the value and simplified our HSI bundles by pricing them aggressively and removing any contract requirements and early termination fees for Verizon services going forward,” said Eric Bruno, Verizon’s vice president of product management. “With these refinements, our high-speed Internet service offers the best value in broadband.”
