The Internet of Things—the internet-ization of everything from FitBits to your toaster—is potentially a booming business for traditional providers. Verizon is betting long on IoT. The company just announced the launch of Thingspace, an open platform that allows developers to be up-to-date on IoT developments and developer kits.
Verizon’s IoT business already grossed the company $495 million this year, and the company is hoping that number expands as cities incorporate more Internet solutions into everyday functions.
“Continued innovation in smart cities, connected cars and wearables demonstrates that IoT is the future for how we will live and work,” Mike Lanman, senior vice president Enterprise Products at Verizon, said in a statement. “Despite the exciting potential, IoT is still too complex, too fragmented, too expensive to connect and too hard to scale. Success in that future relies on a leader that can cut through the complexity and change the IoT model. That’s where Verizon comes in. With our experience in networks, devices, platforms and applications, we are taking a holistic approach to simplifying adoption to expand the IoT market from millions to billions of connections.”
As part of the Thingspace launch, Verizon also announced three new smart cities solutions, and a new, dedicated network core and connectivity options for next-gen IoT devices.
