Verizon is now providing a new 100 Mbps home router, supplied by ActionTec Electronics, to all new subscribers to FiOS broadband and video. Verizon is calling it the centerpiece of its customers’ home networks.

The new broadband home router was built to Verizon’s specifications and relies on existing in-home coaxial wiring, rather than Ethernet cable, which until now the company has been installing between its ONTs and its previous routers. The router also provides wireless connectivity.

Separately, the Newark (Del.) city council has voted to give Verizon a video franchise to offer its fiber-optic-powered FiOS TV. Newark is the fifth Delaware jurisdiction to grant Verizon a cable franchise, following Bellefonte, Delaware City, Odessa and Townsend. Under the 15-year agreement, Verizon will pay the community franchise fees based on the company’s gross revenues on cable services.
