Verizon reported adding 531,000 net postpaid accounts in better-than-expected financial results for the second quarter of the year.
The overall postpaid numbers included 398,000 net smartphones added, company officials said, while the number of added phones totaled a net of 199,000, according to a note from Wells Fargo analysts. Wall Street analysts, the note added, expected 403,000 net postpaid additions and 126,000 net postpaid phone additions.
The company reported postpaid churn of 0.97 percent and retail postpaid phone churn of 0.75 percent. Prepaid connections fell by a net of 236,000 during the latest quarter.
“Verizon is extremely well-positioned for the future,” departing CEO Lowell McAdam said in a statement. “Our financial and operating results for the first half of 2018 were strong, as evidenced by service revenue, earnings and operating cash flow growth delivered in a highly competitive marketplace.”
The carrier’s wireless operations saw total revenues of $22.5 billion, including $15.8 billion in service revenue and $5 billion in equipment revenue. Analysts had anticipated $21.8 billion in overall wireless revenue.
Adjusted earnings and the adjusted earnings margin for the wireless segment also beat expectations, as did the company’s $32.2 billion in consolidated revenue and diluted earnings per share of $1.20.
Wells Fargo analysts wrote although revised revenue standards helped bolster the carrier’s numbers, Verizon “appears to also be benefiting from customers stepping up to higher priced wireless plans and increasing average connections per account.”
The carrier adjusted its full-year outlook due to “better-than-expected equipment revenue trends” and now expects low- to mid-single-digit percentage growth in consolidated revenue.
