Verizon Wireless said yesterday it will close its application storefront, Verizon Apps.
In a statement on its website, Verizon said it initially set out to create an app storefront that would offer device optimization, security and simplicity for developers.
Since it launched in March 2010, the site has been overlooked by end users that primarily get their apps from over-the-top storefronts.
Verizon will begin closing the storefront in January, when it will start the process of removing the Verizon Apps application from all compatible Android and BlackBerry devices. The carrier anticipates completing this process by March 27.
According to Verizon, the closure shouldn’t have much effect on users. Those apps existing on Verizon Apps are already available on multiple app storefronts, such as Google Play, Amazon and BlackBerry App World.
Business apps submitted to Verizon’s Private Applications Store for Business will continue to be available for purchase and download to enterprise customers.
During the transition, developers will still have access to app metrics and reporting and will be able to receive payments.
