DevBot is an autonomous racecar prototype developed by Roborace that’s been in development for over a year. Last summer, in-car footage was released of the self-driving vehicle completing a full lap around the Formula E circuit at Tempelhof Airport. Although DevBot has enough room to fit a human driver behind the wheel, no one is present during the demonstration. The autonomous racecar first entered “explorer mode” to familiarize itself with the racetrack’s layout, before entering “AI mode” to perform a series of high-speed laps.
DevBot completed laps at different speed rates. The autonomous vehicle first drove two laps at 62 mph, increased to 93 mph for eight more rotations, before reaching a top speed of 124 mph. According to Roborace, DevBot can complete a lap within eight percent of the time it would take a skilled human driver, which is a significant difference when it comes to racing. The video below shows DevBot completing a full lap around the racetrack, and was able to catch particular details about the vehicle like its selective braking points, going wide around tight turns, and maintaining perfect positioning throughout the duration of this demonstration.
