
This drone can turn on a dime thanks to six hexagonal nacelles. Students at ETH Zurich’s Autonomous Systems Lab have designed the Voliro drone as part of their undergraduate senior projects. It took just nine months to design and fly the agile drone. Of course, their research is building on a lot of designs that came before. The square-winged Omnicopter was also built as part of an experimental project at ETH Zurich, and Purdue University researchers have also studied hexagonal drones. The ETH Zurich researchers have high aspirations of making a truly versatile hexacopter that can roll on the ground and swim. However, as noted by IEEE, most of these designs have never flown outside a lab setting.
