Michelin’s concept tire sounds like science fiction. Announced in June at the Movin’On conference, the Visionary Concept is an airless, recycled, 3D-printed tire that can be printed right onto the car, if the futuristic video below is any indication. Right now it’s just concept art, and it may very well stay that way, but Michelin says that this might be the tire of the future for self-driving cars. The porous interior architecture allows it stability, and the amount of tread can be changed with each printing in order to accommodate different mobility needs and different amounts of use. Of course, it will also be wirelessly connected and self-monitoring. The organic look seems more suited to an undersea sponge than a tire, but we’ll see whether this concept gets on the road.
