Over 80 percent of households in the United States have Netflix, use a video on demand (VOD) service, or have a DVR, said a report from Leichtman Research Group on Saturday.
The study shows the increasing interest in VOD and online streaming networks. In total, 81 percent of households have at least one service including DVR, Netflix, or on-Demand from a cable or Telco provider. Additionally, 30 percent of households use two of the services, and 13 percent use all three. The majority of users get their subscription video on-Demand from either Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu.
Leichtman Research Group polled 1,214 households in the United States in December 2015 as part of their annual study. They broke down additional demographics when it comes to VOD and SVOD services, finding that the age bracket with the most SVOD users (77 percent) are ages 18 – 24. The majority, 83 percent, watches Netflix on a TV set as opposed to a PC or mobile.
The use of all of these services is on the rise: 8 percent of adults used Netflix weekly in 2010, which rose to 37 percent in 2015. The number of pay-TV subscribers with a DVR rose from 45 percent in 2010 to 64 percent in 2015, and the number of households with a DVR, Netflix, or VOD rose from 70 percent two years ago. The number of cable subscribers who used VOD in the past month grew from 34 percent in 2010 to 51 percent in 2015. In terms of VOD, 74 percent of Telco video subscribers and 61 percent of cable subscribers have used a VOD service from their current provider.
“In recent years Netflix and other streaming SVOD offerings have expanded the use and popularity of on-Demand TV,” said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst at Leichtman Research Group.
