In 2016, Volvo introduced two connected car safety alerts in Sweden and Norway: the Slippery Road Alert and Hazard Light Alert. Now, that tech is making its way to Europe.
The features will be available in Europe on all 2020 models and can retrofit older versions starting from 2016 Volvos.
“Sharing real-time safety data between cars can help avoid accidents,” says Malin Ekholm, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “Volvo owners directly contribute to making roads safer for other drivers that enable the feature, while they also benefit from early warnings to potentially dangerous conditions ahead.”
The Slippery Road Alert gathers information on the road’s surface conditions from other Volvo cars up the road. The system alerts to potentially slippery sections so drivers can prepare and proceed with caution.
The Hazard Light Alert informs all “Volvo cars connected to the cloud service” within a certain range that a Volvo has turned on its hazard lights. By informing nearby cars, drivers can avoid accidents, especially on blind turns and hilly roads.
“The more vehicles we have sharing safety data in real time, the safer our roads become. We hope to establish more collaborations with partners who share our commitment to safety,” Ekholm says.
