This device makes my sci-fi dreams come true.
Valorem, a Missouri-based company, has created HoloBeam – the chat app of the future. Instead of video chatting screen-to-screen, HoloBeam creates a 3D holographic experience. Sign me up!
The app relies on a stereoscopic camera, which creates 3D cloud point data of your conversation partner. Microsoft’s HoloLens technology then takes over, using its headset to beam the 3D image into your home. Streaming in real-time, these incredible 3D visuals are only accessible to the person donning the HoloLens headset.
Whether the person you’re chatting with lives nearby or is across the globe, you’ll still be talking to their holographic counterpart. A 3D image will be rendered no matter the distance, so you’ll always be in the same room while you’re talking up a storm.
Although there is a long way to go until we’re all speaking to 3D versions of our family and friends, this technology definitely shows promise and gives us a peek into what the future might hold.
