Widevine said it has filed a third claim of patent infringement against Verimatrix. The new charge is that Verimatrix’s ViewRight client application infringes a patent held by Widevine, which is asking for an injunction to stop sales of ViewRight.
Widevine says the patent in question (7,299,292) describes a process and streaming server for encrypting a data stream to a virtual smart card client system. The company claims the patent generally covers software-based “virtual smart cards” on a set top box, personal video recorder (PVR), PC or mobile device that manage the flow of data over a network.
The suit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington in Seattle.
In August of 2007, Widevine filed its initial patent infringement lawsuit against Verimatrix for its 7,165,175 patent. In May of 2008, Widevine added a claim of infringement of its 7,376,831 patent. That case is ongoing.
