Xtend Networks has teamed with Paradigm Telecom to create a platform designed to enable cable operators to enter the market for the backhaul of mobile voice traffic from cellular towers to central offices.
The collaboration will pair Xtend’s HFC-based, symmetrical T-1 platform with Paradigm’s relationships in the wireless sector. That system uses traditional DOCSIS standards, a modular headend system from Xtend, and a special T-1 modem from Vyyo, Xtend’s parent company. Xtend also markets a spectrum-enhancing platform that can deliver services in the range of 860 MHz to 3 GHz. Cox Communications has already approved that technology to support commercial service deployments.
“With the incumbent telecom providers accelerating their fiber rollouts, cable needs to look beyond the classic ‘triple play’ to partnerships with wireless providers,” said Xtend CEO Bill Keating.
“Cable’s HFC infrastructure often is in close proximity to cellular towers; by enabling cable system operators to deliver high-quality, highly-reliable T-1 services over their existing plant, Xtend has opened the door for cable’s entry into a new business opportunity without substantial investment,” added Paradigm CEO Karen Toth.
