YouTube TV is rolling out an app dedicated to bringing its live streaming service to the living room big screen, with compatibility for Apple TV, game consoles, and smart TVs.
While YouTube TV was originally focused on mobile viewing, it offered the ability to ‘cast’ from a phone to a TV through the Chromecast dongle. Now more than half the time spent watching the service is through Chromecast on traditional TV sets, according to a blog post announcing the launch.
In the next few days, subscribers can use the new app on any Android TV and Xbox One devices. It will be available in the coming weeks for Apple TV, and smart TVs from LG, Samsung, and Sony.
Notably missing from the lineup is Amazon devices. There is no official word on why Amazon has been left out, but it does not come as a surprise as YouTube’s parent company Google has been stuck in a fight with Amazon. The retail giant stopped selling Chromecast sticks about two years ago.
The new YouTube TV app features a viewing guide made for the TV screen so users can see what’s coming up in the future.
YouTube TV launched in five markets in April but has since expanded, and now the $35 per month streaming service is now available in the top 50 metro areas, with more rollouts expected to come.
