Comcast and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) are launching a video-on-demand (VOD) “channel” called Impact, which will deal exclusively in action programming from MGM.
A Comcast spokesperson said terms of the deal will not be disclosed.
MGM will contribute about 1,000 film and TV titles, including movies from the James Bond series, “Rocky,” “The Magnificent Seven” and “RoboCop,” along with other films with stars such as Chuck Norris, Sylvester Stallone and Charles Bronson.
The “channel” concept for VOD is simply a means of categorizing content in a VOD menu, allowing an operator (and its content partners) to group titles aimed at specific interest groups among viewers.
The precedent for Comcast was set in 2006, when the MSO and two studios – Lions Gate and Sony – launched FearNet, dedicated to horror, science fiction and thriller titles. Time Warner Cable is one of the other MSOs that added FearNet to its VOD library.
The new Impact channel will be available first to Comcast customers this week. MGM will also be able to offer its library to other MSOs, the Comcast spokesperson said.
