Sprint has selected DragonWave’s IP backhaul solutions for its Xohm WiMAX network in North America.
DragonWave said its Horizon Compact and Horizon Duo products will be deployed initially in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. and Chicago markets.
“We are progressing with our deployment of the Xohm mobile broadband network using WiMAX technology, and we will include wireless backhaul in our first launch markets,” said Doug Smith, SVP and chief technical operations officer of Sprint’s Xohm business unit. “DragonWave’s backhaul products are an important part of our ability to ensure the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the network we are deploying.”
DragonWave’s native Ethernet radios will provide Sprint’s Xohm network with carrier-grade reliability, capacity, throughput and Quality of Service (QoS) for backhauling 4G traffic.
In May, it was announced that Sprint Nextel was going to buy Clearwire outright with financing from MSOs Comcast, Time Warner Cable (TWC) and Bright House Networks, as well as from Google and Intel (story here).
The total value of the blockbuster deal, according to the companies involved, is about $14.5 billion. Bright House, Comcast and TWC have negotiated rights not only to bundle and resell WiMAX services as wholesalers, but also to bundle and resell 3G services – that is to say, current wireless services.
