The Comcast Media Center will be moving some of its programming operations to New Jersey, which means there will be some job cuts at the facility located in a Denver suburb.
According to a recent story in The Denver Post, about a dozen jobs could be cut from the Comcast Media Center over the ensuing 18 months.
The jobs are tied to Sprout, Versus and Comcast’s regional sports networks, while Englewood Cliffs, N.J., is where a lot of NBCUniversal cable networks are located.
The relocation affects just the Comcast/NBCUniversal channels that were being originated out of the Comcast Media Center (CMC), but the CMC will continue to originate linear TV channels for other networks, as well as operate its VOD and Hits platforms.
“Over the next 18 months, technical operations for several networks will be transitioned to Englewood Cliffs, where operations for the majority of NBCUniversal’s cable networks are already located,” according to a statement from Comcast. “This move will enable the company to standardize technical procedures and more easily facilitate content sharing across networks. As a result, some positions at the Comcast Media Center in Denver will be impacted.
“During the transition, these employees will be eligible to apply for open positions at Comcast or NBCUniversal, both locally and across the company. For those individuals who are unable to find other roles within the company, we will provide them a severance package, as well as assistance in finding a new position.”
The Comcast Media Center is a division of Comcast. Comcast closed on its majority stake in NBCUniversal earlier this year.
The 305,000-square-foot CMC serves up on-demand and linear TV services to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cable operators, as well as video services to Comcast. The CMC also includes various video and audio production rooms and studios that are used to create and film TV shows, as well as monitoring services. According to The Post, the CMC currently has about 600 employees.
Approximately 60 cable MSOs are using HD channels available through the CMC’s Hits Quantum platform of linear digital video services.
Last year, Gary Traver left his positions as chief operating officer and senior vice president of the CMC.
