On the day that Comcast’s e-mail system was hacked, Akamai released a status report on Internet traffic that indicates attack traffic remains a problem.
The report documents that hacks aimed at disrupting Web sites of everyone from the Church of Scientology to Penn State University continue to be persistent.
Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack traffic constituted 2 percent of all inter-domain traffic. The biggest sources of attack traffic are, in order, China, the U.S., Taiwan and Venezuela.
Globally, there were several outages in Internet connectivity, including a curious coincidence of four underwater cables connecting countries in the Middle East being severed.
The report also evaluates connectivity rates and average connectivity speeds on a country by country basis, as well as within the U.S.
