In a release yesterday, BT CEO Gavin Patterson laid out a number of benchmarks his company will be aiming for as it rolls out broadband at increasing speeds in the United Kingdom.
The promises made by Patterson start with the U.K. government’s plan from earlier this year to roll out 2 Mbps to all U.K. citizens by 2017. BT is aiming for a faster speed; 5-10Mbps for everyone by 2020, with 95 percent of residences having access to at least 24 Mbps speeds.
Patterson also says more than 10 million homes will be connected to 300 Mbps to 500 Mbps by 2020, with 1 Gbps offered as well.
BT hopes to accomplish this by partnering with the U.K. government to roll out Internet to more remote parts of the U.K.
“We want to forge an ultrafast future for Britain and stand ready to help government deliver the broadband speeds necessary for every property to enjoy modern day internet services, such as high definition TV streaming and cloud computing. To achieve this, we need a collaborative effort across industry and government,” Patterson said in a statement.
