Comcast is reportedly targeting cord-cutters with the development of a set-top box for broadband-only customers that acts as a home connectivity hub, as well as a platform where users can aggregate certain streaming video services.
Citing sources familiar with the matter, CNBC reported apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime and YouTube will be available on the new product, which is meant to be akin to Comcast’s X1 platform.
Comcast has already integrated a number of apps on its pay TV X1 platform, including Netflix. Like X1, the new product will also come with a voice remote. In addition to streaming services, users will also be able to rent shows and movies and have the option to purchase a Comcast video offering.
Pricing for the new product hasn’t been decided yet, according to CNBC, which also reported that direct competitors’ streaming video bundles like AT&T’s DirecTV Now or Dish’s Sling TV won’t be available. However, Comcast has already added access to Sling TV packages via its X1 platform, first launching an app in April for Sling TV’s international programming.
Beyond apps, Comcast wants the new product to be a further push into the cable giant’s home connectivity efforts. Customers will reportedly be able to control any internet-connected device through the new platform, including smart-locks and thermostats.
During the third quarter Comcast added 334,000 residential broadband subscribers, beating analysts’ estimates and growing the company’s total high-speed internet customer base to 26.87 million.
