Amazon has extended its streaming rental service to be available through the PlayStation 3.
Amazon launched Prime Instant Video about a year ago. The service had been available through the company’s own Kindle Fire e-reader, Roku boxes and other devices.
Amazon’s streaming service competes with other streaming rental services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus (also available via the PlayStation 3), but with a bit of one-upmanship.
Consumers who sign up for Amazon Prime not only get Prime Instant Video, but also free two-day shipping on all products purchased on Amazon, plus free access (with some constraints) to books via the company’s e-reader, the Kindle.
Amazon Prime is $79 a year for access. The company said that since the launch of its streaming video service, it has tripled the volume of its free library to 17,000 titles.
The company said its rental library has more than 120,000 videos, including new release movies and next-day TV shows. That includes access to some content that Netflix, for example, does not, including titles from HBO.
