Amino gets add-on Wi-Fi from Celeno

September 5, 2012 By Brian Santo

Amino Communications will be offering a USB Wi-Fi dongle, built around Celeno’s Wi-Fi chipsets and including software for HD multimedia home networking applications, with its A140/A540 set-top boxes (STBs).

These models are designed for the retail market for IP-based services. Service providers can provide the dongle, enabling users to wirelessly transfer streamed HD content to their set-tops.

Celeno’s OptimizAir technology is designed to maximize range, throughput and signal consistency and ensures low packet drop, jitter and latency while achieving superior quality of service (QoS).

The chip was designed to minimize the ultimate cost of the dongle. It combines an 802.11n MAC, baseband and 3 x 3 radio on a single chip, and by using a USB architecture that does not require memory.

“In a highly competitive market, service providers need to offer innovative video services to retain and attract customers,” said Amino’s vice president of product management Mike Greenall. “This solution, embedded with Celeno’s best-in-class Wi-Fi technology, will enable our customers to quickly, seamlessly and cost-effectively enable STBs for wireless HD video streaming while maintaining high QoS and QoE.”

The device operates in both the 2.4 GHz and the uncongested 5 GHz frequency channels and works with legacy home networks, as well as advanced concurrent dual-band networks.
