4KUNIVERSE, which was announced on Monday by satellite operator SES, is a general entertainment Ultra HD channel that joins the company’s other networks available in UHD that are being delivered to cable operators and other TV platforms in North America. The channel offers documentaries, sports, movies, and TV shows reportedly aimed at Millennials and Generation X viewers, and is set to debut in January on the SES-1 satellite.
Several U.S. cable operators are currently receiving and testing SES-delivered UHD channels, prepping for distribution of the Ultra HD content to subscribers. More on the trials is available here.
4KUNIVERSE, licensed to multiple video program distributors by Vivicast Media, is the fourth Ultra HD channel in less than two months to join SES’s regional Ultra HD platform, home to eight linear Ultra HD channels as of January, according to an SES press release. SES reports it has signed distribution deals with more than 30 Ultra HD channels globally.
“We have been collaborating with the SES team for months, by testing with block programming on their promotional channel – all leading up to this exciting launch of our 24/7 Ultra HD channel with cable and telecom companies across the United States. Our first carriage deals will be announced shortly,” Matthew Mancinelli, founder and CEO of 4KUNIVERSE, says.
