Boxee today began selling the new version of its set-top that combines network DVR, live TV and Internet apps – a set of over-the-top video services.
At least initially, Boxee TV will be available exclusively in Wal-Mart stores, and online at Walmart.com and on the company’s own website. It will retail for $98.
No Limits DVR, as the name implies, offers unlimited online storage. It is available in a limited number of Boxee’s largest markets, with wider availability pending. Those markets are New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Dallas/Ft. Worth and Los Angeles.
Boxee is calling the initial implementation of its No Limits DVR a beta test and said the service will be free until it works out any bugs. After that, monthly fees will kick in.
Customers who purchase Boxee TV this year will be charged $9.99 a month for the lifetime of their No Limits DVR subscription, Boxee said. After the year elapses, the company plans to increase the fee to $15 a month.
The applications available include Netflix, Vudu, Vimeo, YouTube, Pandora, Spotify, WSJ Live, MLB.TV, TED, Accuweather and Cloudee, which is the company’s own video sharing application currently for iPhones only (subscription fees are, of course, separate).
The company is offering some promotional deals with the introduction of Boxee TV, including:
- Three months of Netflix for new and existing subscribers
- Three months of No Limits DVR (in supported markets)
- A $5.99 credit from Vudu for new subscribers
- One month of Spotify Premium for new subscribers.
