CED announces keynoter, panelists for 2005 ‘virtual’ trade show

November 23, 2005 By CED Staff

Tony Werner, the senior vice president and chief technology officer of Liberty Global Inc., will keynote CED magazine’s second annual Cable Television & Broadband Expo  , a “virtual” tradeshow that will take place entirely on the Web on Dec. 7 and 8.

11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. ET  “Dispelling the myths of IPTV” – IP Revolution PavilionThanks to the buzz it is generating, IPTV has become somewhat of a catch-all phrase for what’s “new and different” with video services. While parlor games and other “unbound” applications continue to grow, “bound” enhanced television (ETV) apps will take interactivity to a new level that syncs viewers with the programs they are watching. This panel will explain what ETV is, how it will work in the cable environment, and give examples of how it will be applied in the “real world.”
Moderator: Leslie Ellis, independent analyst and CED contributing editorPanelists: – John Callahan, senior vice president, advanced technology group, Time Warner Cable – Frank Sandoval, director, OCAP specifications, advanced platforms & services, CableLabs Inc. – Rick Mandler, vice president & general manager, Walt Disney Internet Group & ABC’s Enhanced TV – Craig Smithpeters, manager, advanced technology and standards, Cox Communications Inc.
2:30 p.m. ET – 3:30 p.m. ETSharpening the VoIP edge – Voice Services PavilionIn a world of “bypass” VoIP services that piggyback via high-speed connections, how can cable operators differentiate their IP telephony service offerings? In addition to the key role of pricing and packaging, this panel will discuss the role of applications and services that can be lopped on top of POTS (plain old telephone service).
Moderator: Gary Arlen, president, Arlen Communications Inc. Dave Gaetani, the director of VoIP business development for Motorola’s Connected Home Solutions division, will join CED Senior Editor Karen Brown to discuss the various mobile options. This panel will discuss the options available to operators today, and whether they include straight wholesale deals with mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) or more specialized agreements with technology partners.
3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. ET “Bandwidth management” – The Broadband Enterprise PavilionWhat technologies and techniques will enable broadband operators to expand or get better use of their spectrum as it is continually taxed by bandwidth-eating services such as HDTV and VOD?
