Dan Murphy, senior vice president of engineering and operations for Comcast’s Central Division, will deliver opening remarks when the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers and the Georgia Tech College of Management debut their Management Development Program May 7-11 in Atlanta.
Murphy, a 30-year veteran of the cable telecommunications industry, will provide additional, real-world focus on the challenges for which engineering and operations managers need to be prepared. Murphy’s informal, interactive discussion on May 7 will bring senior-level perspective to such issues as plant capacity and management of capital and operating expenses.
“The fast pace of cable technology today is raising the bar for engineers and operations professionals,” Murphy said. “Through initiatives such as the SCTE-Georgia Tech Management Development Program, we have an opportunity to provide our industry’s most promising young technologists with skills they need to drive future success for cable.”
Part of the SCTE Leadership Institute, the Management Development Program is intended to help high-potential, mid-level cable engineering and operations management professionals acquire or improve the strategic and tactical skills needed to succeed within corporate environments, plan and execute projects, and manage in-house and external resources. The Management Development Program will be conducted in an immersive environment on the campus of Georgia Tech.
Management Development Program classes will address a variety of other practical needs of cable professionals, including:
- Developing a technology strategy
- Analyzing financial statements
- Measuring and analyzing performance
- Perspectives on operational budgeting
- Justifying technology investments in the cable industry
- Managing technology projects
- Leading and managing high-performing teams
- Managing change in technology implementations
- Understanding outsourcing arrangements
- Outsourcing in the cable industry.
In addition, Marty Davidson, vice president of engineering and network operations for SCTE, will be leading an afternoon session on cable network management and total cost of ownership (TCO) awareness for cable products and services.
