Cox Communications has provisioned its first gigabit service in California to an apartment complex in Irvine.
Residents of the Irvine Company’s Park Place Apartment Homes now have access to Cox’s 1-Gig service. Cox isn’t saying which vendors its using for its gigabit tier, which has launched in Phoenix with deployments to follow in Omaha, Las Vegas and one area of Virginia, but has said it would use some combination of fiber and DOCSIS 3.1 once the latter becomes available.
“Cox already offers the fastest residential Internet in Orange County, and with the launch at Park Place Apartment Homes, we’re the first provider in Southern California to offer 1 gigabit speeds to residential customers,” said Dave Bialis, senior vice president and region manager for Cox Communications in California. “As technology continues to advance and change how consumers use broadband, Cox will be well positioned to serve our customers in the future.”
Located at Jamboree Road and Michelson Drive, Park Place Apartment Homes is one of Irvine’s newest apartment communities.
“Having Southern California’s fastest Internet service is part of the exceptional living experience found at Park Place Apartment Homes,” said David Brackett, senior vice president of property management for Irvine Company Apartment Communities.
Cox has previously said it would have the Gigabit tier, which is called “G1GABLAST,” in 150,000 homes in Phoenix by the end of 2015 and in all of its markets by the end of 2016, the latter of which is when DOCSIS 3.1 is expected to be deployed.
Separately, Cox Communications’ first fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) trial went live more than a year ago in south Orange County, Calif. Cox installed fiber in the Rancho Mission Viejo development in Orange County, but so far the services and data speeds are similar to what Cox offers over traditional HFC.
