While EchoStar and affiliate Sling Media are serving as the backbone of Dish Network’s TV Everywhere suite of services, they’re also offering four products for use by other video service providers.
Sling Media’s Slingbox 700U adds Slingbox capabilities to the current crop of Internet-connected set-top boxes via a single USB port. The Slingbox 700U, which is the smallest Slingbox to date, allows video service providers to eliminate the need to develop their place-shifting set-top boxes in order to offer video services over the Internet.
“Television service providers are constantly looking for ways to deliver new and exciting services to satisfy existing customers and attract new customers,” said John Paul, executive vice president of products at Sling Media. “The surprisingly small, easy-to-install Slingbox 700U delivers ‘TV Everywhere’ services at a low acquisition and installation cost because it connects via USB on the existing set-top box and self-configures.”
In real time, the Slingbox 700U decrypts incoming video, transcodes it and then re-encrypts it for secure transmission over the Internet.
The Sling Monitor 150 is the brand name for the HD monitor that Dish Network is calling the Wi-Fi HD Monitor. The monitor is a lightweight, portable, flat-screen display that wirelessly shifts primary HD DVR video content to any location in a home.
The Sling Monitor 150 was designed around a 15.6 inch, 720p display that includes stereo audio speakers and incorporates a built-in folding stand for countertop or wall-mounted use. The product includes integrated dual-band (2.5 GHz/5 GHz) 802.11n networking with an internal MIMO antenna and support for WEP, WPA and WPA2 security.
Sling is also showing its Sling Touch Control, which is a touchscreen remote control, and Sling Receiver 300 at CES in Las Vegas this week. The receiver works with Sling set-top boxes to deliver HD content over existing wireless networks in homes.
