These include InGaN LEDs and AlGaInP LEDs. Toyoda Gosei revealed that Epistar is the only company in Taiwan, R.O.C. getting the cross license, and prior to the date of the press release Toyoda Gosei did not grant the cross license to any other company in Taiwan, R.O.C.
Epistar reportedly holds valuable patents for high-brightness AlGaInP LEDs and high-power GaN LEDs. Toyoda Gosei likewise holds a number of valuable patents for InGaN LEDs. Under the agreement, Epistar and Toyoda Gosei agreed to respect and mutually utilize each other’s technologies in order to further advance the market for LED products. The companies reportedly intend to maintain a friendly and competitive business relationship and pursue the development of high-luminosity LEDs.
Epistar says that the agreement will eliminating the need for concern about each other’s patents. With the research at both companies, and the freedom to use each other’s technology Epistar anticipates that both companies will be able to accelerate their research to improve the luminosity of LEDs.
