Espial today announced software contributions to the Reference Design Kit (RDK) code base for adaptive video streaming that will enable Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) and Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH) for RDK environments.
Espial hopes the its new RDK software will allow pay-TV operators to offer new OTT services and to adopt a easier software approaches for set-top boxes and IPTV platforms.
Espial expects pay-TV operators will be able to reduce costs and speed services by using RDK adaptive bit-rate (ABR) streaming formats like HLS and MPEG-DASH for traditional managed TV services, including video-on-demand, time-shift TV, pause live TV, cloud DVR and IP multicast services.
RDK is a pre-integrated software bundle and common framework for TV provider customer-premises equipment (CPE) like set-top boxes and gateways. RDK supporters and licensees include ARRIS, Alticast, Cisco, itaas, a Cognizant company, Metrological, SeaChange and Pace.
