Harmonic serves up more bandwidth with new DWDM transmitter

Yesterday, Harmonic expanded its PWRLink transmitter family with the rollout of 1310 nm dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) forward path transmitters that make it possible to deliver more bandwidth to the home using the existing hybrid/fiber coaxial (HFC) cable network.

Without adding new fiber, cable operators can use Harmonic’s scalable DWDM transmitters to combine up to eight wavelengths to deliver traffic to segmented nodes.

To increase the bandwidth available per subscriber, cable operators often split their nodes to reduce the number of homes passed. This results in more nodes per service area, and typically the cable operator needs to deploy additional fiber to serve these nodes, which is extremely expensive.

Harmonic’s new DWDM transmitter eliminates this need for additional fiber because multiple wavelengths can be combined onto a single fiber for forward transmission up to 30 kilometers.

“The ability to increase downstream and upstream bandwidth in a cost-effective and reliable way is critical to cable operators’ success in competing with telco and satellite service providers,” said Sunil Frida, director of HFC solutions and strategy for Harmonic. “The new PWRLink transmitters are part of our portfolio of powerful HFC solutions that are targeted at lowering cable operators’ capital expenditures while offering a highly scalable architecture.”
