Toyota’s Mirai runs on hydrogen and gets the equivalent of 67 miles per gallon, but with a limited infrastructure for hydrogen-powered travel, its appeal may be limited to to curious, tech-savvy early adopters in California.
The Mirai will be available for purchase this fall, with an added incentive for the $58,000 car – $15,000 of free fuel. That may or may not help it compete with Tesla, even though it has the upper hand in terms of fuel efficiency for zero-emissions vehicles. There are only 12 of Toyota’s hydrogen fueling stations in the United States, most of them in California, with 46 more planned for the state.
