I Became An Engineer: Because My 3rd Grade Teacher Loved Astronomy

December 2, 2016 By Sarah Goncalves

***Editor’s Note: The “I Became An Engineer” blog runs every friday. To share your story email sarah.goncalves@advantagemedia.com***

This week’s story is brought to us by reader Gene Cross.

These are the things that made me want to become an engineer:

  1. My third grade teacher was passionate about astronomy, and she passed that passion and love on to me.
  2. My dad let me use his spotting scope to view the moon and planets.
  3. I built my own telescopes and was wowed by Saturn and her rings.
  4. The Space Race was on, and I wanted to be a part of the great adventure.
  5. Apollo came to an end and so being a space scientist was “out.”
  6. Optical engineers were in great demand, so I signed up and never looked back.

But it all started with my third grade teacher!
