According to a published report, Matthew Meeds of Fairway, Kan., is suing Time Warner Cable over the rental of his set-top box.
Meeds alleges that Time Warner Cable is illegally forcing subscribers with premium tiers to rent set-top boxes from the company, according to the Associated Press and The Kansas City Star. Meeds wants to purchase his own set-top box, but he accuses Time Warner Cable of hindering his efforts.
Meeds and his attorney filed an antitrust suit Tuesday – in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City – that seeks class-action status on behalf of Time Warner Cable subscribers in the state who purchase premium cable services from the operator.
Meeds’ lawsuit acknowledges that Time Warner Cable offers customers the ability to lease a CableCard, but his suit claims that the nation’s second-largest cable operator promotes a set-top box as a better alternative.
